Friday was the day of extremes when the city recorded the maximum temperature of the season at 41.5 degrees Celsius. However, the picture changed during the second half of the day when certain parts of the city, including western suburbs such as Hadapsar,Khadki and Pune Cantonment, witnessed rain during the evening.

“The rise in temperature is primarily because of dry winds flowing from north towards south, resulting in an increase in temperature,” said Medha Khole, director,India Meteorological Department (IMD).

On Thursday, rain and thunderstorms were recorded in Solapur followed by rains and hailstones in Satara,Sangli and Pune on Friday. “With the increase in temperature, moisture from Bay of Bengal creates clouds and results in rain in heat-affected zones. This natural phenomenon results in decline in the temperature temporarily. Rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue in the city for the next two-three days,” added Khole.

Meanwhile, people have been doing everything possible to beat the rising heat. Sugarcane stalls, juice centres, stalls serving limejuice and buttermilk are flooded with customers in afternoon. “People should take plenty of water and juices to prevent dehydration. Elderly people and children should avoid travelling during day time,” said physician Dr N P Rao.

Meanwhile, heavy rain and stormy weather conditions in Jejuri/Satara led to tripping of a 500 KV transformer at the Jejuri 400 KV sub station. Nearly one third of the city was in darkness for several hours on Friday.
