Principal district and sessions judge Anant Badar recently sentenced a 50-year-old labourer,Haridas Sathe, from Ambegaon Khurd to life imprisonment for murdering his wife Sakharabai (48). The evidence of their daughter-in-law,the sole eye-witness proved vital in the conviction.
Sakharabai was a cook in a mess at Bhartiya Vidhyapeeth and often used to reach home late. Sathe allegedly suspected her of having an affair.
According to public prosecutor Ujjwala Pawar,on March 19,2009,Sakharabai raised an alarm after her husband attacked her with a knife. Their daughter in-law Sangita intervened, but Sathe attacked her too. Sakharabai succumbed to severe injuries. Sangitas statement was crucial in proving Sathe guilty. Other than her,six other witnesses including investigating officer Bapurao Deshmukh were examined Defence lawyer Prasad Kulkarni submitted that Sangitas evidence was not reliable as her clothes had no bloodstains. He contended that Sangita had falsely implicated Sathe to acquire the property.
He argued the victim was murdered by a thief and said police had no recorded statements of independent witnesses. But the court did not consider the submission as the other family members in the house were not injured.
The court observed that the evidence of Sangitas husband Atmaram corroborated with her deposision. Sangita had said Sathe had acted suspicious about Sakharbai for three months prior to the incident.
