A 55-year-old man succumbed to his injuries after falling from the second floor of Sassoon Hospital at around 8.30 am on Sunday.
Police estimate the age of the man to be around 50 years but his identity could not be ascertained till late evening. The man,who fell from the one of the windows near ward number fourteen,suffered serious injuries to his head and passed away after he was brought into the hospital for treatment. It is ynot known whether the mans death was an accident or a suicide.
The Bund Garden police sent the body for postmortem. A case of accidental death has been registered and further investigations are on. Police said that the man used to run errands for a corporator based in Pimplewadi. He was ill and used to visit the hospital for treatment. According to some doctors at the hospital,he may have suffered fits and lost his balance.
The warden posted on the second floor of the hospital heard a noise at around 8.30 am. He saw that a man sitting near the window had fallen down and landed on the roof of the first floor near the chemical lab department of the hospital. Hospital officials immediately took him to the ward nearby for treatment. He succumbed to his injuries at around 9.30 am while undergoing treatment, said Dr Deepa Lad. She said that as the man was wearing white-coloured clothes,the hospital employees initially thought he was one of the staff. But after making enquires,it was found that he was not working for the hospital.
