Honey Singh talks about drug addiction.
Singer Honey Singh has openly spoken about his struggle with substance abuse and how he has overcome the same to become the better version of himself. In a recent interaction, Honey admitted that drugs “damaged” him and revealed that it took eight years for him to get them out of his system.
Speaking to NDTV, Honey was asked what advice he would give to his younger self. Responding to the same, he said, “The Honey Singh 15-20 years back was also very intelligent and ambitious, but he did one big mistake which was to do drugs. And he got influenced by drugs. That damaged me a lot. I tell my all younger brothers and sisters to stay away from drugs and specially dry drugs.”
He added, “Drugs damage you so much slowly, and you don’t even realise it. I had left a dry drugs in 2014 when I got sick, but then also it took me eight years to get better. It didn’t get out of my system easily, so I don’t want anything like this to happen to any anyone, even my enemies.”
Honey also shared that he did drugs when he was at the peak of his career and this was also teh time he avoided seeing his parents to hide his addiction. He said, “During my peak in 2012 to 2014 I had met my parents only 4-5 times because my mind was occupied by fame and money. I was touring the world and had forgotten them. I had also maintained my distance with them because I thought they would get to know about my addiction.”
Honey Singh has openly discussed his mental health struggles, specifically his battle with bipolar disorder. He even took a sabbatical while getting treatment for the same. However, the singer admitted that during this time he kept earning revenue through his old songs as they were still a hit with the audience. He said, “I never read the comments, but I know that talks were going around about whether I should do a come back or not. But the time when I was sick, my old songs worked a lot because we keep getting revenue. And in 2021, I realised that my old songs were still working, but people were still calling it a comeback because I had gained weight and I looked weird. I started working on my album and it didn’t work that much. So I myself thought that maybe I’m not upto the mark. But when I made the album Glory in 2024 then I knew that this will be a hit.”
In an old interaction with Lallantop, Honey Singh said many influential people pushed him towards it. “Few names, few very big and influential names. They had teased me. I was so badly addicted to these substances that I was always high. Most of the time, I was unaware of myself and my surroundings,” he said.
He shared in the same interview how he prioritised his health over his work commitments during that time and how his family came to his rescue. “I had quit liquor, hashish, and other substances, informing my family about the mental health issues that demanded immediate attention and treatment,” he said.
Honey had also admitted how addiction ruined his relationship with ex-wife Shalini Talwar. “Success and fame got to my head. When that happened, I neglected my family and completely lost myself in money, fame, addiction, and women. I did terrible things. I almost left Shalini and forgot about the family,” he said.
