The Maharashtra State Primary Education Department has directed all schools in the state to conduct classes only in the morning hours to shield children from the impact of summer heat.

Primary classes will be conducted from 7 am to 11.15 am, while secondary grade classes from 7 am to 11.45 am, according to a March 28 circular by Sharad Gosavi, Director of Primary Education, and Sampat Suryavanshi, Director of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.

The circular said that various districts in the state had passed orders directing schools to operate in the morning half to protect student health. There was a need for uniform timing for schools across the state, which was done with this circular.

The department has also instructed the schools to refrain from outdoor exercises and activities and ensure that fans are functional in all classes and cold water is made available for the students.

It has asked schools to educate students on how they can protect themselves from the heat and encourage them to eat watermelons, muskmelons, oranges, pineapples, cucumber, and other fruits and vegetables with high water content.

Shoes or slippers must be worn while going out and umbrellas, towels, caps, etc should be used to shield themselves from the sun, the circular stated.
