‘Start land acquisition for Pune’s new airport in Purandar this month, finish it by June’: CM Fadnavis

Fadnavis had earlier stated that the international airport in Pune would become operational by 2029. The proposed airport is to be named after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed the officials to start the much-awaited land acquisition for the proposed international airport at Purandar in Pune district this month and complete it by June.

CM Fadnavis said this during a high-level meeting held a few days ago where he directed the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to start the process. The official notification about land acquisition would be published by the end of January, the CM said.

The present airport at Lohegaon is facing operational and expansion constraints as it also serves as the base for the Indian Air Force.

Fadnavis, back in 2016, had declared that the new international airport for Pune would come up in Purandar. Spread over 2,300 hectares, this airport is expected to meet the long due requirement of an international airport for Pune.

Officials of the district collectorate said during the meeting, the chief minister had instructed officials to ensure the entire operation is completed by June.

Previously the international airport was supposed to be come up in Chakan. However, the proposal had to be shelved following protests by local residents and the site at Purandar was finalised.
