Happiness is the purpose of life: Dalai Lama

Puneites couldn’t have asked for a better Sunday morning as His Holiness Dalai Lama,Dada Vaswani and actor Aamir Khan came together on one stage.

The programme began with the two spiritual leaders — the Dalai Lama and Dada Vaswani — greeting each other warmly at the entrance of the Sadhu Vaswani Mission at Sadhu Vaswani Path. They were then featured on a live talk show, hosted by actor Aamir Khan,to kick off the week-long celebrations for Dada’s 95th birthday.

Packed to capacity, the event, held at the auditorium on the premises of Sadhu Vaswani Mission, was attended by around 5,000 people.

Khan asked Dada and the Dalai Lama questions on their life and their philosophies. Dada expressed his thoughts on love and the urgent need of the hour to spread proper secular education in the world. The Dalai Lama agreed to this thought and emphasised the need for educational institutions to respect all religions.

The Dalai Lama spoke about the importance of active charity work by any spiritual leader or institution. Khan seized the opportunity to ask the Dalai Lama the meaning of happiness. “Happiness does not necessarily come from a pleasurable or joyful experience. There are over seven billion people in the world, all of whom possess the equal right to be happy. Happiness is the purpose of life,” he answered. The Dalai Lama added that he has noticed people of high intelligence levels succumbing to stress, which leads to depression and sometimes even suicide, whereas those with lower intelligence levels don’t put in much thought to everyday intricacies and manage to stay happy.

He also pointed out the influence parental love can have on the attitude of a person. Stating his own example he said,“My mother was a villager,an illiterate farmer but she taught me the most vital lesson of kindness. The love and compassion I preach is what I have learned from her,” he said.

He also pointed out that people, who do not experience parental love and affection in their childhood, have to deal with issues of insecurity and low self confidence as they grow into adults.

Answering Khan’s question on how to deal with a situation when love is not reciprocated,he simply said that love is not oriented according to others attitude. “When the Chinese congressmen tortured Tibetans,we tried to keep compassion. It does not mean we accept their wrong doing. It simply means that we don’t react with anger or violence. We try to correct their actions with love and compassion for their own well being. We try and save them from bad karma which will fall on them if they continued with the wrong doing,” he said.
