With Janata Raja,a play based on the life of Shivaji Maharaj being staged from today,Babasaheb Purandare talks about the play and the role of history in contemporary India
There are times when the representation of history is as glorious as its repetition. With a larger-than-life representation of the life of the great Maratha warrior Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century,Janata Raja,is one such historic portrayal of the golden times. Now in its 25th year, the play will be staged at the Nehru Stadium starting today. Babasaheb Purandare, the man behind the grand portrayal talks about the play, history and the role of history in contemporary India.
Like it happens with most of us,when we think about our glorious past,we either get emotional or feel like telling about it to many. But the unfortunate part of the story is that no one has the time to listen to the history of this great nation. I feel that I am blessed to have been guided by Shivaji Maharaj and Janata Raja is my tribute to the great warrior, says Purandare.
Over the years,Shivacharitra has been a source of inspiration for many. Purandare however feels that Shivaji Maharajs history has been highly misinterpreted. We all feel that we know history, but we must accept that we are all ignorant. It is this ignorance because of which those with political interests glorify that aspect of history, which is favourable for them. Through Janata Raja,we are portraying facts, says he.
While accepting the reality that an effective dialogue is lost between the thinkers, historians and common people,Purandare also feels that the researchers are equally responsible for the outbursts that happen due to controversial statements. Says he,There are a number of facts associated with historic figures. But one needs to understand that there are emotions attached with them as well. While making a controversial statement, the researchers need to be responsible and think a step beyond,as in- is the statement important? Is it true? And if true, does it hold relevance? Also,we erect statues of these personalities but what we need more than the statues is the spirit that they inculcated.
With over 900 shows across the country in cities such as Mumbai,Pune,Bhopal,Gwalior,Indore,Surat,Ahmedabad,Agra,Delhi and many more, the play depicts the important events in Shivaji Maharajs life against a backdrop of forts and historic buildings. We have been doing this for over 24 years now. And what has made the journey successful is the selfless contribution of over 250 artistes and over 3000 technicians who have been associated with the play for its various aspects. This portrayal is grand, just like the emperor that it is depicting. It is based on the principles he taught and the values he instilled. Amongst the performers, there are Hindus as well as Muslims and every performer here is an artiste who is inspired by Shivaji Maharaj. It is his story and his play and I am sure that there will be a day when we will present the 5000th show of this play, concludes the octogenarian.
