This column takes a sneak peek at candid conversations across college canteens

En route to the airport, the campus of Symbiosis International University, stands out in the midst of the nearby construction in Viman Nagar. As one steps into the spotless area and heads to the canteen, life seems chirpier. A short walk later as one makes way through the dungeon like car park, the brightly lit haven for students calls out.

The canteen would seem small for such a spacious campus, till one enters the adjoining mess, which is quite large. The billboards were crowded with posters and numerous lost and found notices. A few round tables were occupied by students with their chairs facing the LCD television screen, from which blared a Bollywood item number. A lull time, the canteen seemed bare, though the juice centre was doing brisk business. A table in the centre had students animatedly talking to each other.

“I miss Hannah Barbara,” complains Kriti Bajpai, with a frown on her face. A first year student of Design, she and her friends were in the middle of a heated conversation. The topic – cartoons of that bygone era, which was being sorely missed by them. Her friends nod their heads in unison as a hot plate of fried rice and chilli cheese toast are placed before them. Those were the days when Duck Tales would be telecast on television. “Those cartoons had a moral at the end of it,” says Siddhi Soi,sipping on her lime juice. “The cartoons of today are just fake animation,” she adds with a distaste. The era of Swat Kats,Johnny Quest and Batman ,is much in demand. “I flip right through the cartoon channels these days,” adds Bajpai, raising her voice as the television ups hers. While the others munch,Sahil Gardner takes it upon himself to explain how exactly Bayblades are played.
