In designer Spirits

One would expect Tommaso Cavalli, son of celebrated Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli,to be a man of extravagance and flamboyance.

One would expect Tommaso Cavalli, son of celebrated Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli,to be a man of extravagance and flamboyance. But he is every bit the simple man he claims to be. His style leans towards elegance and charm, much like the ‘Roberto Cavalli Vodka’ that was launched in the city at Mix@36 ,Westin,on Friday.

Fashion is synonymous with his family name, but he shrugs it off,“My style is very simple. I’m a jeans and shirt kind of man. Actually even dad is.” But he is quick to explain the difference between their lifestyles. “I like to be in the sidelights. Fashion never really interested me. My passion lies in producing wines and I prefer to follow my heart,” he says.

So,how did he come to be associated with the ultra premium designer vodka? “The American society gave the idea of designing the bottle in his signature style to my father. It was launched worldwide in October 2006 and has seen good success in the spirits market. My father wanted me to develop and promote the vodka in other countries and I accepted it as a challenge,” he answers.

The vodka bottle fascinates Cavalli Junior as much as it interests the fashion conscious drinker. With animal prints at the bottom and a serpent encircling the bottle,it captures the eye almost instantly, much like a signature dress by Roberto Cavalli! In fact,Tommaso says,“My father enjoyed designing the bottle. It’s close to his heart. It looks a lot like a bottle of fragrance. The drink too is very elegant as it has been inspired by sophisticated and elegant women. It’s smooth and pure and can be used for cocktails as well.”

The price of the bottle can make some raise their brow, but then it is for the high-end client. “India is ready for this luxury brand. A lot of Indians keep travelling abroad and they have sipped this drink. So,it’s good that it is now available in their own country,” he feels.

It is travel and exposure to other cultures that has also given a boost to the wine industry here. Wine-n-cheese events and wine dinners are no more rare treats. Tommaso’s eyes light up as we mention ‘wine’. He shows off the award-winning Cavalli Tenuta Degli Dei wine that was also showcased yesterday alongside the vodka. “This is a young project and very niche, quality wine. It has limited production – only 25,000 bottles – and is entirely my baby. The vodka is close to my father’s style, while the wine reflects my passion,” he smiles. The rich, red wine is perfect for Indian food,he quips. “When we launched in Mumbai,I dined at a typical Indian restaurant and quite liked the food. The food is spicy and this red wine goes well with it,” he adds.
