The police arrested two persons for posing as policemen and duping an elderly couple in Viman Nagar. The suspects have been identified as Nazar Changez Irani (24) and Shabbir Miskin Irani (19) of Irani Wasti in Shrirampur,Ahmednagar.
Police said the duo approached Vitthal Moze and his wife in Viman Nagar on September 27 on a two-wheeler,posing as policemen in plain clothes,and asked the woman to remove her gold ornaments and hand to them as the police were on a checking drive in the area following a crime incident.
The Viman Nagar police team comprising senior inspector Prakash Shah,inspector Sunil Gharge,assistant inspector Mahesh Golkotgi,assistant S-I S S Shelke,constables D T Pawar,B R Sawant,A D Sathe,S V Salvi,A S Jadhav initiated the investigation.
Police found that the two-wheeler used in the crime was in the name of a Shivajinagar resident and Nazar and Shabbir were using it. Police then laid a trap,arrested them and recovered the jewellery from their possession.
The magistrate court has remanded them in police custody till October 7. Investigation is on to know if the suspects have committed more crimes, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Sanjay Jadhav.
In another incident,one Kalawati Namdev Chaudhari (90) was duped by two fake policemen in Warje on Wednesday morning. So far in this year,police said,as many as 57 cases of imposter cops cheating people have taken place in the city.
