The ability to portray the extraordinary ordinariness of human emotions is but rare. The medium can be any. Still camera or the Talkies, books or even songs and poems. Belonging to this school of expression is eminent cinematographer and ex-FTII student,Sunny Joseph. He feels that cinema even now is one of the most powerful media. In his own words,it is Love,24 times per second. Joseph was in the city to deliver the inaugural lecture at the K K Mahajan Memorial event held at FTII. As a cinematographer I am concerned about how an image is used in a particular context. The knowledge about our world today is transmitted more through images and as ‘image makers’ working in cinema,we cannot escape from the socio-political and philosophical questions on the use of images.
Mahajan, was an ace cinematographer,Joseph says,People like him were institutions. He just didn’t know how to say no. All one had to do was give him the camera. His lights were the biggest feature that he brought to the craft. He inspired me to shift from editing to cinematography.
