IIT students’ team files patent for method to adsorb n-waste

Students demonstrated a cost-effective method to adsorb thorium and uranium ions from effluent waste.

A group comprising students from Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) and Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) have demonstrated a cost-effective method to adsorb thorium and uranium ions from effluent waste.

Parth Ballara and Dipesh Punetha, both final year BTech students from IIT,demonstrated the experimental work and successfully filed a patent.

“The composite membranes and beads of nano iron oxide and nano graphene oxide platelets developed by the group can efficiently adsorb uranium (VI) and thorium (IV) ions. The raw material obtained to fabricate such composites were from the cheapest natural resources. The presence of ions and toxic metals in waste is a major environmental concern,” said Balasubramanian, head of materials engineering deparment,DIAT.
