ICSE schools shut for another week

Around 15 schools affiliated to the ICSE board,including The Bishop’s,St Helena’s,St Mary’s and Hutchings,have decided to remain closed till August 29 owing to swine flu scare in the city. These schools will reopen on August 31.

A meeting of representatives of all ICSE affiliated schools in the city was held at The Bishop’s School on Saturday. Representatives of some unaided schools in the city were also present. “It was decided that as a precautionary measure,the schools should be shut for one more week. Some parents,present in the meeting,also expressed the same opinion. We thought it will be better for the students,” said a representative of St Helena’s who attended the meeting.

Some representatives of schools affiliated to the CBSE board were also present for the meeting. “We came to know of the meeting,but we have not taken any decision on extending the closure,” said Neelam Chakrabarty,principal of Delhi Public School,Aundh.

Swine flu updates
IMA opposes move to reopen education institutions

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has strongly opposed reopening schools and colleges on Monday. In a letter to the Collector on Friday,they have mentioned that there was no point in opening the schools during Ganeshotsav. The IMA has said that the schools and colleges should be closed till September 3,the last day of the festival. “The last couple of weeks has seen a decrease in cases. Reopening the schools will only see a rise in the number of detections,’’ said former state vice-president of IMA Dr D Shirole.

‘Victim was not staying at Spicer college hostel’
Franky Lalunjia from Mizoram,who died of swine flu on Friday at the YCM Hospital,was not staying at Spicer College hostel as mentioned in the Newsline on Friday. Principal of Spicer College Dr Justus Devdas said that he did not live in the hostel and stayed at Sanghvi. “He was a former student and had passed out two years ago,’’ Devdas said.

Only eight screening centres open today
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has informed that due to a drop in the number of swine flu cases in the city,out of the 52 H1N1 screening centres,only eight will function on Sunday between 9 am and 5 pm. However,all the centres will be open from Monday. The centres that will remain open on Sunday: Shivshankar Pote Hospital (Sahakarnagar),Dr Kotnis Health Centre (Shukrawar Peth),Annasaheb Magar Hospital (Hadapsar),Meenatai Thackeray Maternity Home (Kondhwa),Shivajinagar ST stand,Pune Railway Station,Swargate ST stand,Dr Naidu Hospital.
