The proposal of providing identity cards to milk distributors of the Pune District Cooperative Milk Producers Federation (Katraj Dairy),announced over six months back, may not materialise in the near future as the district milk federation has now asked the state government to set up a milk regulatory body to deal with various issues pertaining to the dairy sector, including the distribution of identity cards.
The move to provide identity cards to milk distributors had come in the wake of rising incidents of milk adulteration recorded in the city. The decision had been taken after the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) held a meeting with the milk distributors in September. Private milk producers as well as co-operative players had attended the meeting.
There are 900 milk supplying organisations attached to the milk federation, while the number of distributors in the city are 650. After the meeting in September,we had started the preliminary work of distributing identity cards to milk distributors. We had immediately collected all the data of milk distributors for the identity cards. However, these distributors later expressed their reservations about the plan. We had to hold back this move considering their objections, said Vivek Kshirsagar, managing director of Katraj.
The milk distributors had objected to the move as most of them sold milk products of other milk brands and it would be inconvenient to have the identity card of a single dairy.
He said,Following this,we wrote a letter to the dairy development ministry of the state to set up a milk regulatory body, which will deal with issues including identity cards for milk distributors. It is now upto the state government to take a decision on this. Joint commissioner of FDA,Sanjay Patil said,During the meeting in September,we had issued guidelines to the milk operators in the city. We had asked them to procure licences and I-cards for milk distributors. However,it is up to the milk federation to take a decision.
