IBB team wins science quiz

Why don’t mangoes taste as good if they are refrigerated for six months? What will be the chemistry of compounds in a two-dimensional universe? Although the sun has a higher gravitational pull,why does the moon have a greater role in determining sea tides? These were some of the questions asked during the finals of Mimamsa,organised by the Science Club of Indian Institute of Science,Education and Research (IISER). The event was won by the student team of Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology (IBB).

The IBB team comprising Yashraj Chavan,Rajan Dasgupta,Raviranjan Kumar and Neeraja Purandare emerged as the champions whereas the Fergusson College team comprising of Rucha Deshpande,Shreya Ghosh,Rakesh Pawar and Abhijeet Borkar were the runners up,said Dr Sutirth Dey,organiser of the science challenge held on January 30 and 31 at the IISER campus.

Mimamsa 2010 is a three-day science-related event in which teams and individual participants from various Science and Engineering Colleges of Pune,Mumbai,Nashik and Hyderabad compete to showcase their understanding of core concepts in Biology,Chemistry,Mathematics and Physics. Mimamsa aims to challenge the concepts and reasoning abilities of the participants,says Dey. This year’s competition saw 11 colleges and 53 individual contestants from Pune,Mumbai,Hyderabad and Nasik battle it out.
