The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) on Thursday issued closure notices to 56 hospitals and clinics for not adhering to the bio medical waste scheme. While P K Mirashe, regional officer of the MPCB was on leave, when contacted,he said that the headquarters had issued notices. “We had given warning notices earlier but now the HQ has decided to issue notices to as many as 56 hospitals and clinics,’’ Mirashe said.

Under the Bio Medical Waste (maintenance and handling) Rules,1998 and amendment thereof,it is obligatory for all clinical establishments to obtain authorisation for generation of bio-medical waste. It is also mandatory on their part to submit an undertaking and also treat the BMW generated at their units as per the act,Mirashe said.

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (Pune branch),along with Passco Environmental Solutions company, will conduct an awareness camp for general practitioners on May 11 to enrol them in the bio medical waste disposal programme of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Dr D D Chandakkar,Deputy Health Officer,PMC,said that as many as 600 general practitioners have been involved in the scheme. While there are approximately 5,000 general practitioners, the campaign is underway to encourage them to participate in the scheme. So far,537 hospitals and over 100 laboratories are participating in the bio medical waste disposal scheme.

On May 11,the officials will explain the methodology to collect and dispose medical waste. There are several consultants who do not generate bio medical waste at their clinics,Chandakkar said. However,we have eight collection points and details about the scheme will be provided,he said.
