On Sunday, Pune and its surrounding region received heavy to very heavy rains. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rain in the next few days.

The rain, IMD said, was likely due to development of a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea. Similarly another cyclonic circulation persists over Bay of Bengal near the coast of Myanmar.  These two events led to rain and thunder showers in Pune, Nashik and other parts of Maharashtra.

Till 5.30 pm Shivajinagar reported 13.3 mm of rainfall while areas like Hadapsar (20mm), Chinchwad (7.5 mm), Pashan (8.5 mm), and Lavasa (15.0 mm), also reported heavy rains. These areas also reported winds at the speed of 30-40 km/hr.

IMD in its advisory has cautioned about similar rain and thunder in the next 48 hours.

The weather department has advised people to stay indoors during lightning, to avoid using electronic equipment and to strictly refrain from standing under trees.

At present all eyes are on the advancement of the monsoon. IMD has predicted that monsoon will hit the Kerala coast on June 4 and will hit Pune only after June 10-13. Given the cyclonic conditions over the Arabian Sea, IMD has kept a close watch on progress of the monsoon.
