A “complex” organ transplant surgery on a 19-year-old brain-dead patient has given a new lease of life to five other patients, according to the doctors at a private hospital in Pune.

Doctors at the Dr D Y Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, said the entire procedure was conducted under one roof on February 23. Two months on, they said, all five patients are recovering well with some reporting for their first follow-up.

The 19-year-old boy who met with a road traffic accident in Phaltan was admitted to a hospital in Baramati and later shifted to Dr D Y Patil hospital on February 18. His injuries were too severe, doctors said, adding that the patient was declared brain-dead, and transplant coordinators convinced the family members to donate his organs.

The heart was transplanted in a 52-year-old male patient, lung in a 39-year-old female patient, liver in a 53-year-old male patient, kidney and pancreas in a 35-year-old male and the other kidney in a 47-year-old male.

Dr Yashraj Patil, Trustee and Treasurer of Dr D Y Patil Hospital, said, “We are grateful for the brave and selfless decision taken by the family. The loved one they lost continues to live through the five lives he has saved.”

Dr P D Patil, Chancellor, Dr D Y Patil University, said, “Increasing awareness among citizens about organ donation and transplantation is an encouraging thing, but there is still a huge gap between the number of patients needing organs and the number of organ donors. Hence there is a need to promote organ donation.”

The kidney, liver and pancreas transplants were led by Dr. Vrishali Patil, Head of the Transplant Department and Program Director – multi-organ transplant surgery.
