Perhaps the first re-replacement operation of a previous degenerated valve was recommended at Ruby Hall Clinic by cardiologist Dr CN Makhal. The operation carried out by a team of surgeons led by Dr Sameer Bhate who was assisted by Dr Sudhir Bhate. The previously degenerated valve of a 66-year-old doctor suffering from a degenerated bio-prosthetic valve implanted 10 yrs ago at Ruby Hall Clinic by Dr Sudhir Bhate,was recommended a re-do surgery by Dr Makhale. This patient who is also a doctor decided to have the fourth generation Trifecta valve. This was the first Trifecta implant in the city and for the first time in the country,that this valve has been used to re-replace a previous degenerated valve. The surgery was carried out by Dr Anil Sant and Sandeep Mutha were the anaesthetists and Anand Kulkarni was the perfusionist.

New appointment

Dr Jeevan Ladi ,eye surgeon was elected unopposed as President of Maharashtra Eye Specialists Society (MOS). Elected for a period of three years,Ladi now plans to carry out many innovative activities for public education,awareness to prevent blindness,improve eye care and update knowledge of eye specialists all over Maharashtra. He is a past president of Poona Eye Surgeons Society (POS).

New Equipment

The Pune Cantonment Board has procured C-Arm Image Intensifier and Ultra Sound Machine allotted out of M P LAD Fund by Suresh Kalmadi,MP. The machines have been procured and installed at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel,Cantonment General Hospital,Pune. The ‘C’ arm Image Intensifier gives screen image of bones with minute details and hair line fractures,displacements. With this equipment the surgeons will be able to detect all defects and its correction with precision and less blood loss.

Health portal

Dr J S Hiremath launched the FITBIT device at Poona Hospital. The Fitbit Tracker collects activity data automatically while it is worn by the user all day. The collected data is uploaded to a website where the user can see their data and track their progress toward personal goals. At the website,users can also manually maintain a log about their nutrition,weight and other health information in order to gain a complete picture of their health. Hiremath says,”Fitbit is an innovative and simple tool that motivates patients to reach their health and fitness goals.”

Campaign : Eye Donation

Lawrence & Mayo (L&M),announced their association with Guinness Record holder Virag Wankhede’s ‘Roshni Zindagi Mein,’ a pan India campaign to increase awareness about eye donation – with 2 lakh cornea donations needed every year as against 20,000 cornea donations at present. It will also communicate that one simple call to universal number 1919 can help people contact the nearest eye bank and transform a life.
