Thyroid awareness

Abbott and the Indian Thyroid Society announced a commitment to further improve thyroid disease awareness in women in India with the ‘Make a Difference to Life – Think Thyroid,Think Life’ programme. The initiative is focused on improving disease awareness of thyroid disorders, increasing access to diagnosis, improving standards of treatment for women and continuing medical education for doctors. Since 2010,approximately 10 lakh individuals have been screened at the diagnostic and education camps that have been held in India throughout the ‘Think Thyroid’ programme. In 2012,the effort will expand to reach more than 10 lakh women. Dr Uday Phadke, consultant endocrinologist,Ruby Hall Clinic says “Undetected, untreated hypothyroidism during pregnancy can lead to an increased risk of miscarriages, stillbirth and premature birth. It is also detrimental to the infant’s neurological development. Our effort,we hope will bring more attention to bear on this problem and make testing for hypothyroidism regular and routine amongst pregnant Indian women.”

Renewal of registration

The Maharashtra Medical Council has decentralised the process of Renewal of Registration with IMA. Valid registration is mandatory for practice or for working as a doctor/medical officer. All the doctors who are MBBS / LCPS and post–graduate diploma or degree holders have to renew their registration every five years. This year,it is mandatory for those medical practitioners who renewed their registration last in 2007 to do so. Those who registered afresh in 2007 also need to renew their registration. The IMA Pune branch has been authorised to provide this facility for Pune district doctors. For further details, contact 24464771 / 24430042
