The girls hostel of Government Polytechnic,Pune (GPP) has been overcrowded for the last three years,BJP city unit vice president Sandeep Khardekar said here recently.
Though the capacity of the hostel is around 54 persons,college has been admitting more than 90 girls for the last three years, he said in a press release issued here on Wednesday. Khardekar and party worker Mandar Balkavade have written to Higher and Technical Education Minister Rajesh Tope in this regard.
Khardekar has said that he obtained the information regarding hostel capacity and the actual admissions in the last three years through a Right to Information application. He has attached a copy of letter written by the director of technical education to the principal secretary of the technical education department which he received as a reply to his RTI application.
The letter says that there is an urgent need to increase the capacity of the girls hostel in GPP. The letter dated April 21,2010,seeks a go-ahead to the maps and budget prepared to erect new girls hostel of a capacity of 180 in GPP campus.
Though the capacity of present girls hostel is 54,90 girls were admitted in 2006-07. In 2007-08,130 girls were admitted of which 100 were accomodated in the hostel and 30 were shifted to the principals residence that was vacant. In 2008-09,150 girls were admitted of which 100 were put up in the hostel and 50 in the directors and officers residences.
