It’s been two months since one arm of the 1.7 km Ganeshkhind flyover from Aundh towards Shivajinagar was opened for the public after the citizens criticised the delay in completing the work. Now, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is all set to open another arm of flyover from Baner in a month and the remaining arm from Shivajinagar to Pashan and Baner in December.

“The work of Ganeshkhind flyover will be completed by December end. One arm from Aundh to Shivajinagar has already been inaugurated. The arm from Baner road will be opened next month and the arm from Shivajinagar to Baner and Pashan will be opened to the public in December,” said Yogesh Mhase, Metropolitan Commissioner of PMRDA.

The double decker flyover is 1.7 km long and has a two lane ramp for vehicles traveling from Aundh and Baner towards Shivajinagar, three lane flyover from Shivajinagar to Baner and Pashan.

He said once the flyover is completely opened to the public, gridlocks on Ganeshkhind road will end.

The state government had demolished the previous two flyovers on Ganeshkhind road at Pune university and E-Square in 2020 during Covid lockdown to undertake the work for integrated double decker flyover with metro rail on top from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar. The work on the flyover should have been completed in 2024 but delays kept occurring.

In the last few years, citizens faced a lot of traffic issues while commuting via Ganeshkhind road due to the construction of flyover and metro rail work. “The PMRDA has also speeded up the work on metro line 3 from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar and the double decker bridge on Ganeshkhind road is part of it. The metro rail service would begin in March next year,” said Mhase.

Meanwhile, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has now started the process to construct a grade separator at Pune university junction for further easing the traffic flow on the busy road. The proposed work includes construction of a grade separator at Pune University chowk and connecting arm from Senapati Bapat Road to double deck bridge at University chowk on Ganeshkind road.

The grade separator will be 7.5 metre wide and 440 meter long with a covered portion of 210 metre and open length of 150 metre and 80 metre on either side. It will be heading from Shivajinagar director to Aundh skipping the Pune university junction. The traffic from Shivajinagar to Baner and Pashan will move from the double decker flyover while towards Senapati Bapat road through on grade road.

The project also includes construction of a connecting arm from Senapati Bapat Road to double deck bridge. The approaches for Flyover will be of reinforced Earth wall. The 152 meter length and 7.5 metre wide connecting arm wide will have an approach road of 87.50 metre length.
