2 drown, 3 missing during Ganesh idol immersion in Pune district

The incidents occurred during the immersion of Ganesh idols at various water bodies in the Chakan and Junnar areas of the Pune district.

Two people drowned and three others were reported missing in four separate incidents in the Pune district of Maharashtra during Ganesh idol immersion at various water bodies Saturday morning. A search was underway for the three missing people.

Ganesh idol processions and rituals were held Saturday when a large number of devotees immersed Ganpati idols in various water bodies, including rivers, streams, wells, reservoirs and artificial tanks. During the processions and rituals, three incidents were reported in the Chakan area of Khed taluka, where two people drowned and two others went missing. Another incident occurred in Junnar taluka, where one man was reported missing.

According to information given by the Chakan police station under the Pimpri-Chinchwad police, the deceased was identified as Sandesh Popat Nikam, 36, who drowned in a well in the Biradwadi village when people were immersing a Ganesh idol in a well. His body was taken out later.

In another incident around the same time in the Waki Budruk village of Khed, one man drowned while another was reported missing when a group of youths was immersing in a Ganesh idol. Locals recovered the body of a man identified as Anantkumar Jaiswal, 21, while a search is on for another man. The local police said that the group had ventured beyond the demarcated area for idol immersion.

In the third incident, a man was reported missing in the waters of the Bhima River near Shel Impalgaon town when he and his wife were immersing a Ganesh idol around Saturday noon. A strong current of the river swept the man away, and he could not be traced after that. A search is underway for him.

The fourth incident took place in the Nimgaon Sava village of the Junnar taluka of the Pune district. A man named Ashok Khandu Gadge entered the Kukdi River and was swept away by a strong circular current. Officials reported that a search is currently underway for him.
