Its highly regular structure makes it a language that can be deciphered by the computer easily, but the reason why this sacred, ancient language finds so many takers, goes beyond it. Sanskrit, which goes back to the 4th century, has a beautiful legacy. It’s not just its grammar and structural superiority that distinguishes the language from the rest. The richness of its history has made it one of the most treasured languages studied world wide. The language today is not restricted to learning the texts of Kumarsambhava by Kalidas or Naishadha- Charita by Sriharsha. Students are now creating their own literary pieces and trying their hand at producing scripts and stories in the language.
In a recent Ekanki Spardha organised by Fergusson College, students not only presented their skill and excellence in the language but also explored their creative side by writing plays and scripts all in Sanskrit. The competition was in its 12th edition this year, and saw participants from the Sanskrit Department of Pune University and S P College. The students wrote entire scripts in Sanskrit and directed their plays, bringing out a fresh perspective on how the language can be propagated.

The winners for this year’s competition was the Department of Sanskrit,UoP. Shares Shailaja Katre,a reader at the Department of Sanskrit,University of Pune,This is the second time we have won this award in a row. What I really like about this competition is that it helps develop the abilities of the students in the language. Writing in Sanskrit is not easy, and not many go for it,but through efforts like these, they can start thinking in that direction. The theme of the winning play was based on the value of teachers and the influence they yield. Around nine students were part of the team and the script was written by Tanmay Bhode,a first year student of MA (Sanskrit). Talking about the script,Bhode shares,I had first written the play in Marathi, and then with the help of my classmates and faculty we translated it. The play dealt with the way teachers are burdened with other work, you know like election duties and likewise. It then went on to say that if teachers are all together they can play a great role. The team members who were a part of the play were Yogita Satavalekar,Bhagyashree Kale and Swarmughdha Bhagwat among others.
