Fried & tested

Do visions of deep-fried pakoras,samosas,kachoris,alu-tikkis and bhajjis make you want to rush to the nearest fast food joint and gobble them up? If you have answered in the affirmative to this question, you’ve got company.

Do visions of deep-fried pakoras,samosas,kachoris,alu-tikkis and bhajjis make you want to rush to the nearest fast food joint and gobble them up? If you have answered in the affirmative to this question, you’ve got company. There are scores of people out there, who want to indulge in anything fried and crisp, yet restrain themselves due to health constraints.

Yet,if consumed judiciously, fried snacks can be the tastiest available snacks. As Kusum Singh,a homemaker puts it,“I remember, when we were young, having bread pakoras and bhajias used to be the high point of our days, especially during holidays.” However, due to health concerns, she has to cut out on it these days. Just like so many others.

But ask Dileep,a vada-pav vendor in Camp about the state of his sales and he answers that it has been good going, except for the recent slump in sales due to the swine flu scare. “Everyday,we get about 50-60 customers, who order vada-pav,samosas,bhajji and mirchi pakoda. There is always a demand for vada-pav,especially after a good spell of rains,” says Dileep.

From roadside food vendors to fast food chains,it’s the same story. Go to any of the fast food outlets in town and most people will demand either French fries or fried chicken wings/legs and other such items on the menu. Of course, the fact that it is unhealthy and more often than not, artery clogging, does not seem to deter the fried snack enthusiasts. “Atleast 100 people walk in on any given day and order fries or chicken wings/legs. So,a majority of foodies prefer deep-fried snacks to baked and shallow-fried ones,” informs an employee of a fast food chain,on condition of anonymity.

However, not all consumption is sourced from outlets; many people prefer cooking at home and stress it’s much healthier than outside food. “My five-year-old son is always asking for onion pakoras and I prefer to make it at home. It’s healthier and there’s always the advantage of serving it fresh and with very little oil,” says Meeta Raina,a school teacher from Kondhwa.
