A special court convicted four gangsters under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for looting a businessman in Kondhwa in 2010. Two got seven-year rigorous imprisonment (RI),while the other two got five-year RI. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on each.
The then police commissioner Meeran Borwankar had also deposed in the court as a witness in the case. Shahbaz Khan (21) from Kondhwa and Shadab Shaikh (20) of Nana Peth were sentenced to seven-year RI,while their accomplices Taher alis Lala Sharif Shaikh (22) of Bhavani Peth and Shoaib Muneer Shaikh (22) of Nana Peth were sentenced to five-year RI.
According to the police,on August 7,2010 at around 8.30pm,steel trader Hansraj Singhal was driving home from his godown in Handewadi with Rs 12 lakh when two persons on bike suddenly blocked his way and threatened him with a knife. Soon a third person joined them and the trio fled in Singhals car with the cash and his two mobile phones all amounting to Rs 18 lakh.
Singhal had lodged a complaint with the Kondhwa police station. The four accused were arrested 18 days later. The police had managed to recover Rs 3.17 lakh from them,two cars,including that of Singhals,and one motorcycle.
During the course of trial,special public prosecutor Subhash Kalbhor had argued that the four persons had formed an organised crime syndicate and were responsible for many serious crimes in Kondhwa. Shahbaz was the leader of the gang and four cases were registered against him and Shadab while one each against Taher and Shoaib, he told the court.
Assistant commissioner of police (Wanowrie division) Vitthal Pawar who had investigated the case with the assistance of senior inspector Prasad Hasabnis and inspector Milind Thosar from Kondhwa police station had also deposed in the court.
