Seeking to ease the process of refund of income tax to people, the income tax department will set up a centralised processing centre (CPC) at Hinjewadi in Pune.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee made the announcement during his budget speech on Monday. Pune I-T officials said they had been pursuing the issue with the centre at the official level. I-T officials said this will greatly facilitate the refund of annual income tax returns and fast track the manual filing of returns.
Additional I-T Commissioner Shishir Agarwal said,The centre will come up at Hinjewadi and we are working out the money required to set it up.
I-T officials said the facility will ease the manual filing of returns. The data generated from manual filing of returns will be processed to Hinjewadi CPC. The centre will serve as a back office for us and the data will be digitised which will also facilitate the refunds.
Officials said this is among the series of initiatives of the IT department towards e-governance adding that they have already been sending the e-returns filed by the companies to the Bengaluru-based CPC. The department will take a decision on direct processing of even the e-returns from companies to Delhi IT office from the proposed CPC at Hinjewadi to make it available to assessing officers (AOs).
The Finance Minister said the Bengaluru CPC increased its daily processing capacity from 20,000 to 1.5 lakh returns in 2010-11. But earlier there were issues of AOs not having timely access to the returns after the data was forwarded to the Bengalaru CPC.
Earlier, the IT department in Pune had informed Director General,Systems,New Delhi, that it takes a long time for details of returns filed by companies which are processed to the Bangalaru CPC to reach the AOs. The IT department in Pune had urged for prompt availability of the details to the AOs to enable them to take action against the defaulting companies. A meeting of chief commissioners of the IT departments Western Circle was held with the DG Systems in Pune to discuss the issue.
However, officials said the processing of data from Bengaluru CPC has now become faster.
Finance Minister said the governments CPC set up in collaboration with private players to take care of income tax filings and returns, have performed well and improved the tax regime. Apart from Pune,Manesar and Kolkata will also get a centre each.
