Flab-ulous flip

After the shooting of the first half of Natarang, unlike other actors,Atul Kulkarni did not quite invite the break.

A perfect 70 kg,the lanky Atul Kulkarni is back in shape to shoot the second half of the film Natarang

After the shooting of the first half of Natarang, unlike other actors,Atul Kulkarni did not quite invite the break. And when what lay ahead was another daunting task with its fair share of risks,Kulkarni’s determination to accomplish it was the only respite. The process of shedding 15 kgs that he gained to get into the character of a traditional wrestler had put at stake his tightness of his skin. And so apart from the usual gym equipment, what accompanied Kulkarni’s forty-day weight loss schedule were nine other machines for the special circuit treatment. “There were nine different machines for nine different body parts. In 15 minutes I had to finish 20 repetitions of each. That was really hectic and tiring. If i wouldn’t have gone for the circuit treatment chances were my skin would have got loosened and so do my muscles,” says Kulkarni.

In the city just before the shoot of the second part of the film that kick starts from the 19 of this month,Kulkarni talked about the psychological and physical pressures handled by him during the whole flipping flab business. While for Kulkarni reducing weight was more challenging than putting on 15 kgs,for his fitness trainer Shailesh Parulkar making someone like Kulkarni gain weight was more daunting. With a high metabolism rate,Kulkarni’s body posed quite a threat of weight loss during the shoot of the first half of the film. “ We used to gym with the car headlights turned on. Probably this for the first time ever has happened in Marathi cinema when a tempo full with gym equipment accompanied the team. Since my body’s metabolism is excellent,I was prone to losing weight while shooting for the film so work out and diet was compulsory,” says Kulkarni.

But for Kulkarni, who confesses he was never into sports, losing weight in just forty days was a tough nut to crack. Starting from two and a half kilometres,Kulkarni had to extend the distance to 12 on an everyday basis. “ I had to get up at four in the morning and go for a walk. The walking distance that started with just two and a half kilometres stretched to 12. Apart from that I had to do more of cardio, circuit exercises and stretches. To be very honest for me losing weight was tougher,” smiles he.

The actor who says deciding not to read any script for six months is professional suicide right now is concentrating on Natarang for which he refused to undertake any work for a year.

In the film Kulkarni plays a wrestler who wants to be part of a local tamasha group. Wrestler Gunaa metamorphoses himself into a tamashaa waala, someone Gunaa always aspired to be.The role required Kulkarni to change his diet plan and get into a serious workout mode to look like a wrestler. The actor had to gain 15 kgs in two months and lose it in a break of 40 days.
