Five policemen from the Kothrud police station have been suspended for making suspected car-lifter Rajendra Shivaji Babar (40) drive a car after handcuffing him, resulting in an accident.
The car hit four cars and two motorcycles near Sambhaji Park on Thursday, injuring four persons.
Ironically, the police have also booked Babar in an attempt-to-murder case, claiming he allegedly attempted to kill the four injured in the mishap. A complaint of attempt-to-murder was lodged at Deccan Gymkhana PS.
On a tip-off,the Kothrud police arrested Babar, who has committed about 50 thefts and his accomplice Appalal Pandu (29) near the Shivajinagar court on Thursday. Interrogation of the suspects revealed that they had come to the spot in a stolen car. Police claimed they did not have a driver and asked Babar to drive to Kothrud police station. Babar was driving,Pandu was next to him, while a few cops were sitting on the back seat. Another police vehicle was following the car going to the Kothrud police station via JM Road.
But on JM road,Babar drove the car at high speed, hitting six vehicles on the road and also injuring four persons. The injured have been identified as Sudhir Nimbalkar (48) Chandrashekhar Kulkarni (50),Azar Shaikh (22) and Devidas Dolari (27).
Pune Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh said on Friday that an inquiry has been ordered and it was revealed that some policemen had committed a fault by asking the accused to drive the car.
