A fire breakout saw three godowns at Lohiya Nagar in Bhavani Peth engulfed in huge flames for over two hours on Sunday. No casualty was reported. The fire broke out around 6 pm when the dried grass on the roof of one of the godowns caught fire. It rapidly spread as they had rubber and oily material.

The fire first engulfed the Tata Motors spare parts dealer Ratan Trading company’s workshop following which it spread to Chandan Trading Company and Memon Scrap Godown.

According to the fire brigade, they received the first call around 6 pm following which two fire fighters were immediately sent to the spot. As the fire spread, eight water tankers belonging to the Pune Municipal Corporation,Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation,Pune Cantonment Board and Khadki Cantonment Board were sent. A total of 80 fire fighters were summoned to put out the fire. The road opposite Sonmarg was closed for around one-and-a-half hours. The fire was brought under control around 8.30 pm.

Central fire brigade station officer Shivaji Memane said,“There was a lot of smoke emanating from the godowns due to the presence of rubber and oily material. Also, the approach road to the godown is very narrow posing a lot of problem. People gathered to see the proceedings also made things difficult.”

Rattan Singhvi, owner of Ratan Trading Company, said,“The godown was closed on Sunday and only two staff were present in the godown when it caught fire. But no one was injured in the incident. I estimate the damage to be around Rs 30 lakh.
