As the heat sets in,here are some tips to build up resistance against the rising temperature

No season is as demanding as this one when it comes to adequate precautions, and as the city has seen a perpetual rise in temperatures the next two months will require ample of defense, diet and drills to beat the heat. While many are invariably exposed to the scorching sun there is a certain possibility of showing at least the minor symptoms. From early ageing to skin cancer and migraines to lethargy inappropriate care can create a lot of hitches this season.

While an increase in the water intake is a fundamental condition one also need to stress on foods with high water content. “People generally consume spicy food and later try to compensate it by drinking more water which in turn accentuated the problem. Oily and spicy food should be totally shunned since it becomes hard to digest. Although we do not have fixed foods for the season, the ones with cooling properties like cucumber and watermelon should be consumed with around half a litre increased intake of water especially for those who work outdoors,” adds Varsha Vaze, manager dietician Talwalkar’s Gym.

The anticipation of a weight loss due to the heat provides the only respite however it is not that light. “Since there is a lot of perspiration there is a misconception that a mechanical weight loss is happening too. Basically perspiration is pure water loss. It melts down to a proper diet. Exercise helps in toning and shaping but the food intake has to be low in order to avert weight gain. Exercises are must this season since the existing health problems can rise due to the heat,” says Swati Kadam trainer Director,Fab The Gym.

The most ubiquitous are the skin problems if not, atleast the tan. Giving a few guidelines to shield the skin,Yashwant Tawade, consultant dermatologist,KEM hospital says,“Pollution has increased the damage due to ultraviolet rays and while sunscreens partially help for a couple of hours a physical barrier is always better than a chemical one, hence one should cover the skin with hats scarf and so on. Secondly fungal infection is a common occurrence due to perspiration and thick fabrics like jeans act as poor absorbents enhancing the problem. Carrot juice is the best since it protects from ultraviolet rays.”
