Ex-commandant grilled again

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday continued to grill the former commandant of the National Defence Academy (NDA) Lt Gen Jatinder Singh in connection with the alleged irregularities in the recruitment of group C employees at the academy.

CBI sources said the former NDA commandant would not be questioned further as of now. They,however,did not rule out the possibility of him being called again in future. On Monday,the CBI had grilled Singh for 10 hours.

Lt Gen Singh,who arrived at the CBI office in Akurdi at 10.30 am,left around 4.30 pm. It is learnt that in the course of investigation,many senior officers at the NDA have been questioned,including those of the rank of Colonel and Brigadier. Singh was NDA commandant when the alleged job scam surfaced in June. His staff officer Col Kulbir Singh,Physical Training Officer Col A K Singh,besides a civilian staffer of the academy and five others who allegedly acted as agents,have been questioned by the CBI and are out on bail.

Lt Gen Singh was shifted out of the academy on July 4,on the basis of a CBI letter to Defence Minister A K Antony seeking his transfer to facilitate an unbiased probe into the case. The case has not seen fresh arrests or seizures after the first action. It is learnt that Singh was asked if he had any knowledge of the alleged malpractices.

The CBI is in the process of preparing a chargesheet in the case.
