Students from 40 talukas, where drought has been declared, along with 224 Revenue Circles which were included in February this year are eligible for this. (File Photo)Despite a circular from the Directorate of Higher Education (DHE) directing that exam fees be waived off for students from drought- affected areas in the state, some colleges in the city have failed to do so. With Monday being the deadline for submitting exam fees, students have been left in the lurch.
On February 28, the DHE sent out a circular for higher educational institutes in Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik districts directing them to ensure that all students from drought-affected and drought-like areas are given an exam fee waiver.
Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) also sent a circular regarding the same on March 5. Students from 40 talukas, where drought has been declared, along with 224 Revenue Circles which were included in February this year are eligible for this.
However, colleges like SP College, Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Modern College of Engineering (MCOE), Arihant College of Arts, Commerce and Sciences (MCACS) are some of the colleges that have not yet implemented this.
An undergraduate student from Beed district studying in Modern College said, “Due to poor financial condition I haven’t even been able to pay my tuition fee, I don’t know how I will manage the exam fee. I come from Parli taluka but I was told that I will have to pay the fees.”
When asked, the principal of SP College said he was not aware of this earlier, but the waiver will be implemented now. He said all students who qualify for it will be exempted from the fee. An official from Arihant College said the principal visited the university with regard to this, and details of students will be furnished and the circular implemented soon.
“My exam fee and fee for backlog papers add up to Rs 2,600. I could not afford it but managed to pay it to avoid any risk. Another friend from the same district has still not been able to collect the money,” said a second year student from a SPPU-affiliated college.
Meanwhile, the principal of MCACS said the scheme is now being implemented while the principal of MCOE remained unavailable for comment.
