Environmental studies no longer separate

SSC students will no longer have environmental education as a dedicated subject

SSC students will no longer have environmental education as a dedicated subject. It is being integrated into other subjects by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE).

The subject until academic year 2012-13 used to carry 100 marks,60 for theory and 40 for projects. There was a grade system of assessment at the school level.

“It was a policy decision by the government to introduce topics of environmental education in most of Class X subjects as per court order. The move would help students to have a holistic understanding of the subject, which is the need of the hour,” MSBSHSE chairman Sarjerao Jadhav said. Academicians told Newsline that environmental education as an isolated subject was not being taught properly in many schools considering the fact that students’ assessment took place at the school level only.

It is noteworthy that the compulsory component of environmental education will have 50 marks for HSC from academic year 2013-14 in place of the grade system.
