This new effort aims to re-define the way diet books influence nutritional preferences
Shantaram G Kane speaks with a careful accent. I am a chemical engineer. I started studying Ayurveda as a hobby, and managed to make some breakthroughs. Today he is a retired man, working full-time dedicated to his chosen field of study. From these years of committed study recently emerged the book titled Diet and Lifestyle for Health in the 21 st Century . Launched in March this year, one look at its table of content reveals a rare mix of practical advice and scientific reasoning.
Kane comes with no training or educational degree to back up his book. But he has spent years into researching the subject and digging out practicable ways of healthy dietary practices. See,Ayurveda outlines some pathya ,on what to eat along with what medicines. During my research I realised that dietary information is so poor amongst people. In spite of my education, even I was not paying much attention to my diet. This information has to be more than just about calories, Kane says. He gradually put together his findings and observation, and the book took shape.
In an age when advice and suggestions on what constitutes right eating inundates us through every possible medium, one more book on it may seem like an indulgence. But Kane makes a valid point to justify it. There is so much information in nutritional text books, but how much of it can be applied into the day-to-day life of a normally educated person? And Kane’s approach attempts to preach less and educate more. If one does a Google search on any topic, one tends to get extreme view points and facts. Like it would be either pro-saturated fats or pro- ghee.
The idea of the book was mooted by one of the people who have sought Kane’s advice over the years. That was February last year. It was the trigger. The book is divided into two sections, which,as Kane would like to describe it,are,An operation section which describes how much to eat,how to balance proteins, what to avoid, how much moderation to exercise and so on. The next section describes the science behind all the advice, why to avoid what has to be avoided.
Kane has different ambitions attached to the book. The ultimate aim of the book is to help a person to design his/her own dietary plan. A book cannot possibly outline 100 different diet plans for everybody. What it can do is guide the reader develop one that suits his/her needs. That’s what this book is about.
