A motor vehicle cases court in Pune Monday sentenced two men to 15 days of simple imprisonment along with fine after they were found guilty of drunk driving and other traffic violations.
In the first case, a 29-year-old driver, a resident of Mangal Bhairav, Nanded City, was caught driving under the influence of alcohol on October 24 last year. The driver was charged under the Motor Vehicles Act sections 184 (driving dangerously) and 185 (driving by a drunk person). The court of Judicial Magistrate First Class S B Patil found him guilty on both counts and sentenced him to simple imprisonment for 15 days and a fine of Rs 10,000.
In the second case, a 31-year-old resident of Vidyanagar, Pimple Gurav, was caught driving under the influence of alcohol on March 27 earlier this year. The driver was charged with driving dangerously, drunk driving and driving without a licence. The driver was found guilty on all counts and the court sentenced him to simple imprisonment of 15 days and a fine of Rs 12,000.
The prosecution of the cases was handled by Police Inspector Runal Mulla and Sub Inspector Vikas Patil, while the Public Prosecutor for the case was Varsharani Jadhav. The Pune traffic police said stringent action against drunk drivers will continue in the coming days as part of a coordinated year-long drive.
In 2024, as many as 5,293 people were caught driving drunk. In 2025, 3,948 persons have been caught drunk driving by the end of July.
As part of the procedure, people caught with a higher than permissible limit of alcohol in breath analyser tests are booked. They are prosecuted in a designated court for punitive action. If a person’s blood alcohol level exceeds 30 milligrams per 100 millilitres, as detected by a breath analyser, or if they are under the influence of a drug to the extent that they are unable to control the vehicle properly, they will be charged under these provisions.
For the first offence, the provision attracts punishment of imprisonment for a term of up to six months or with a fine or both. For the second or subsequent offences, if committed within three years of the commission of the previous similar offence, imprisonment may go up to two years, a fine or both.
