LT Gen DP Vats,who is considered an expert in the field of ophthalmology,took charge as the director and commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) here after Lt Gen Shiv Kumar Sharma retired on December 31,2009.
Vats is a graduate of the Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS),Rohtak. He was commissioned into the Indian Army in August 1975. He completed his MS (Ophthalmology) from AFMC in 1982 and received training in Anterior Segment Surgery at AIIMS,New Delhi in 1992,in eye banking at LV Prasad Eye Institute,Hyderabad in 1998 and hospital management at IIM,Ahmedabad in 2007,said a press note from the AFMC. He has held various prestigious appointments,including senior faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology,AFMC,Pune,senior advisor at Command Hospital (WC),Chandimandir and head of the Ophthalmic Services as consultant and dean (academics) at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral),Delhi Cantonment.
During his tenure as commandant of the Command Hospital,Pune,the hospital was awarded the coveted Raksha Mantri Trophy after being adjudged the best hospital of the Armed Forces.
