Dowry death: 20-year-old woman dies by suicide in Pune; husband arrested
Pune resident Swati Suraj Pathak's husband and in-laws allegedly tortured her mentally and physically over dowry.

A 20-year-old woman died by suicide last Saturday, allegedly following harassment by her husband and in-laws at their home in Kesnand in Pune city, less than a month after Vaishnavi Hagawane killed herself after levelling similar charges against her husband and his family.
The police said they arrested Suraj Rajendraprasad Pathak, 26, the husband of Swati Suraj Pathak, on Sunday in connection with her death.
They have also booked Swati’s father-in-law, mother-in-law, and others under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 80 (dowry death), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 3(5) (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention of all), and 352 (intentional insult), after the woman’s mother, who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Mau district, lodged a complaint with the Wagholi police.
Besides him, the police have booked Swati’s father-in-law, mother-in-law, and others under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 80 (dowry death), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 3(5) (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention of all), and 352 (intentional insult), acting on a complaint lodged with the Wagholi police by the woman’s mother, who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Mau district.
All the accused are residents of the Om Nivas building in Kesnand.
The police said Swati got married to Suraj on March 6, 2024. As per the FIR, her husband and in-laws allegedly asked her to bring money from her parents. They are also alleged to have insulted her and subjected her to physical and mental torture.
“The husband of the deceased woman has been arrested. No suicide note was found. Further investigation is on,” said Assistant Police Inspector Vinayak Ahire.
Vaishnavi Hagawane, 24, allegedly died by suicide at her in-laws’ house in Bhukum in Pune district’s Mulshi taluka on May 16.
The Bavdhan police have arrested Vaishnavi’s husband Shashank Hagawane, 27, father-in-law and expelled NCP leader Rajendra Hagawane, 57, mother-in-law Lata, 54, sister-in-law Karishma, 31, and brother-in-law Sushil Hagawane, 27, in the case, which was registered May 17 on a complaint lodged by Vaishnavi’s father Anil Sahebrao Kaspate.
