District awaiting release of Rs 97 lakh for implementation of Manodhairya scheme

In the state nearly 1112 cases have come up for funds and the department is scrutinising each case.

The district women and child welfare department is awaiting Rs 97 lakh for 37 approved cases under the Manodhairya Yojana which offers financial, medical and legal aid to victims of rape and child abuse. The cases were approved on June 26. There were 61 cases which came up to the district women and child welfare officer and after scrutinising each case, the amount was finalised taking 37 cases into consideration.

District woman and child welfare officer M Birajdar said that these cases came up between March and June. “However of the 61 only 37 could be approved while 16 were kept pending and for 8 cases, there needed to be more intervention and they have been kept in suspension,’’ she said.

Before March there were eight cases of which only five were approved and again only in case of four cases the amount could be disbursed. Officials from the District Woman and Child Development wing said that the cases are not cleared easily as there are certain criteria and the cases have to be in the period from October 2013 onwards. “There were several cases from before that and that is one reason they were not approved,’’ said the officials. This is a major concern for many families as the government’s circular maintains the time frame.

In the state nearly 1112 cases have come up for funds and the department is scrutinising each case. The state Women and Child Development Department has sanctioned 512 cases and paid in only 273 cases. According to statistics, Thane leads the list with 189 cases followed by Pune, Satara, Beed and Sangli. Activist Vihar Durve who had got the details has stated that there are double standards in the process with respect to the time frame and that leaves out many.

The scheme approved by the government aimed at providing financial, medical and legal aid, rehabilitation and counselling to victims of rape and child abuse providing between Rs 2-3 lakh to victims.
