COURT diary: Lab assistant convicted of rape

Principal district and sessions judge Anant Badar sentenced Kailash Memjade,47,laboratory assistant of a school in Guruwar Peth to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment for raping a 12-year-old student in the school laboratory last year.

PUNE: Principal district and sessions judge Anant Badar sentenced Kailash Memjade,47,laboratory assistant of a school in Guruwar Peth to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) for raping a 12-year-old student in the school laboratory last year. Badar also sentenced the accused to six-months RI for wrongful confinement and to two years RI for criminal intimidation. He was also fined Rs 6,500. The sentences will run concurrently. The judge also passed strictures on Stella David,school’s headmistress for not taking cognizance of the incident when the girl’s parents approached her.

Bail to 48 farmers held in Maval firing

PUNE: Additional sessions judge Vinay Joshi granted bail to 48 farmers who were arrested in connection with the Maval firing case. The farmers were released against personal bond of Rs 7,500.

Order on Mane deferred again

PUNE: Judicial magistrate first class Umeshchandra More deferred the order on whether to shift Santosh Mane to Yerawada mental hospital,on April 9. Defence lawyer M K Agarwal had sought the shifting of Mane to the mental hospital. He had put on record various medical reports stating that he was mentally unstable and was taking treatment for the same. The prosecution has challenged this arguing Mane’s mental treatment can also be carried out in Yerawada prison where he is at present lodge.
