The Pune police have taken up several steps to ensure safety and security of NE students in Pune. Most of the attacks on NE youths were reported in Kondhwa,Hadapsar and Camp areas last year.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Manoj Patil said: In the backdrop of the attacks,we try to keep track of the problems they face and if they perceive any kind of threat at any point in time. We also try to increase the communication of these students groups with local residents. Police stations have started regular communication with the people from NE residing in their jurisdictions. We are thinking of organising football matches between these groups.
Deputy Inspector General of Police with the Northern Mizoram Range C Zorammuana said: When the incidents had taken place last year,we were in touch with the Pune police authorities where the attacks had taken place. We were also coordinating with the Mizo welfare associations in these areas.
Recently,Pune Police Commissioner Gulabrao Pol issued orders that all police stations should prepare a list of Northeast citizens living in their jurisdiction and conduct meetings with them every month. Senior police inspectors and police inspectors (crime) at the police stations have been asked to conduct these meetings where they are supposed to understand their problems. Phone numbers and email address of senior officers should be shared with them.
DCPs are also asked to hold such meetings at zonal levels and arrange cultural functions and sports events for NE students. The DCP,Special Branch, has been asked to keep a watch on social networking sites. The DCP,Cyber Cell, has been asked to maintain a register for complaints received through emails in this regard and pass it on to the zones for further action.
