Comprehensive Mobility Plan for Pune district: DyCM Pawar proposes 276 km Metro, six new bus routes

The plan will be implemented in three phases at an estimated cost of Rs 1,26,489 crore. Various government agencies will be involved in its execution.

The Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the rest of the district for the next 30 years was presented at a District Planning Committee meeting on Thursday. This plan covers an area of 20,550 square meters and envisions a 276 km metro network along with six new Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) corridors over the next three decades.

Proposals for Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi metro routes have been sent to the central government for approval. Additionally, a 148 km metro network is proposed for routes such as District Court to Yevlewadi, University Chowk to Dehu Road, Kharadi to Khadakwasla, Nigdi to Chakan, Hadapsar to Saswad Road, and Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor.

Besides this, a 128 km metro corridor has been planned, covering routes like District Court to Alandi, Wakad Chowk to Shewalewadi. Along with this a proposed High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) through the Pune Municipal Corporation and the PCMC will be developed, bringing the total proposed metro length to 276 km.

Currently, PMPML (Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd.) serves only 10 percent of the commuting population, but the plan aims to increase this to 60 percent. For this, PMPML requires 6,000 buses, including 1,625 electric buses, with the total bus count expected to reach 11,564 by 2054. The plan also suggests 641 km of new bus routes with 18 additional corridors and 10 new bus terminals.

In PMRDA (Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority) limits, six new BRT routes have been proposed, covering: Ravet to Rajgurunagar, Gawali Matha Chowk to Shewalewadi, Ravet to Talegaon Dabhade, Chandni Chowk to Hinjewadi (117 km in total), Loni Kalbhor to Kedgaon HCTMR and Bhumkar Chowk to Chinchwad Chowk.

This plan aims to enhance public transport connectivity and efficiency across the Pune metropolitan region over the next three decades.
