Radio Parwaaz — Yerawada Women’s Prison launches first dedicated community radio

The dedicated community radio for the women's wing of the high security Yerawada Central Prison (YCP), comes more than 10 years after Radio YCP was launched in the men's wing in 2014.

A DEDICATED community radio for the inmates of the Yerawada Women’s Prison — Radio Parwaaz (which means flight, symbolizing freedom and aspiration) with two inmates assigned as Radio Jockeys was launched by the Maharashtra State Prison Department. Radio Parwaaz will feature programmes of motivational speech, yoga, inspirational stories, music and on women’s empowerment and legal awareness among other themes.

The dedicated community radio for the women’s wing of the high security Yerawada Central Prison (YCP), comes more than 10 years after Radio YCP was launched in the men’s wing in 2014. The Radio YCP which is still going strong once saw Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt work as an RJ when he was incarcerated there. Radio Parwaaz was inaugurated by retired IPS officer and former Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi on Monday.

A press statement from the Prison Department in this regard stated, “Reformation and Rehabilitation is the motto of the Prison Department. In keeping with this, the prison administration regularly conducts various cultural, spiritual, social, educational, and recreational activities within the prison to help inmates develop a positive outlook toward life. Radio Parwaaz was inaugurated at the Yerawada Women’s Prison through a joint initiative of India Vision Foundation, Delhi, and global technology company SLB. The radio room was inaugurated by Kiran Bedi, former Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.”

“Through the Radio Parwaaz initiative, women inmates will be able to listen to motivational talks, yoga and meditation sessions, a listener’s choice programme Aap Ki Khateer, inspirational talks and stories, freedom fighter stories, life lessons, Panchatantra tales, programs on women’s empowerment, legal awareness sessions, spiritual songs, and entertainment music. This initiative aims to help the inmates overcome despair and move forward with hope and positivity in their lives.” the release stated.

“Two inmates from the Women’s Prison, who had a flair for anchoring and radio hosting have been selected for the programme. These two inmates will run Radio Parwaaz. The two have also been provided training on radio jockeying. In the coming days, more inmates may join the team.” said an officer.
