College of Engineering Pune proposes to increase intake, introduce new courses
The university also plans to introduce courses on Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (UG & PG programme), Al in Signal Processing, Al in Healthcare, Intelligent Communication System, and MSc in Applied Psychology.

The College of Engineering Pune (COEP) has proposed to increase the intake in various core engineering courses in academic year 2025-26. For BTech Civil Engineering, the intake will be increased from 75 to 150, for BTech Computer Science and Engineering from 150 to 300, for BTech Electrical Engineering from 75 to 150, and for BTech Instrumentation & Control Engineering from 38 to 60.
The university also plans to introduce courses on Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (UG & PG programme), Al in Signal Processing, Al in Healthcare, Intelligent Communication System, Material Process Technology and MSc in Applied Psychology with an intake of 30. The Applied Psychology programme is an attempt to embrace a multidisciplinary approach.
“Core subjects like mechanical and civil are equally important. Trends come and go but we should not ignore core subjects,” said Vinayak Pai, recently appointed chairman of the university’s Board of Governance.
He added that the Chikhali research campus of COEP, which has been delayed for a while now, is expected to be ready by February. “We have created the basic infrastructure. We are in discussion with three or four industries to understand their problems and the facility will be available for them to set up labs. These are the automobile industry, IT industry, and sustainability and agriculture industry. Once a partner is selected it will take further three-four months to set up a lab,” Pai added.
Minor in AI, governance on cards
The university is also planning to offer multidisciplinary minors in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 from the fourth semester in topics like Governance, Leadership and Public Policy, Quantum Computing, AI, psychology, foreign languages, Indian Knowledge Systems. These courses will be offered in collaboration with institutes like BORI, Gokhale Institute, and Deccan College.
