Rock band Them Clones on what the city can expect from its upcoming gig

One is a metal fan,the other likes Freddie Mercury. One listens to Chemical Brothers, while the other likes Pearl Jam. Members of Delhi-based rock band Them Clones – Clarence,Dev,Gucci,Joseph, and Prithwish – combine their musical influences to create their music on stage. They’re clones of themselves when performing, they say,and so far, that’s worked in their favour. On an 11-city tour of India, which is supported by VH1,Them Clones will take centrestage in Pune on Friday. “And it’s great to be back here just after a few months. The vibe in Pune and the response is always fantastic,” says their ace drummer Dev.

They released their first album,Love.Hate.Heroes in 2009 and this tour will go beyond that, they say. “We’re on our Singles Tour. We’ve just released two new singles – All About A Heartbreak and Jealousy – and the tour is meant to specially promote that,” Dev says. With Dev on drums,Prithwish on vocals,Joseph and Gucci on guitar and Clarence on bass, the band hopes to win over fans once again with their music. Prithwish says,“After our album released,we toured a lot of cities and then got back to the jam room. We went in a completely different direction. Our songs have taken a different turn and yet are laden with the signature Them Clones sound.” The tour will also have them singing more of the new material they are working on,“which should hopefully be released by next year,” Dev says.

The two singles are up for download on their website. “The songs, just like all our music since the time we started in 2000,have an ‘everyday life’ touch to them. While each one of us has his own musical influence, our main inspiration comes from daily occurrences – things that happen in our lives or any news that strikes us,” says Prithwish. Dev chips in,“Like in 2001,we were busy jamming together when we heard of the 9/11 attacks. We immediately stopped what we were doing and got down to working on a new song. That’s how ‘In the name of God’ happened and we dedicated it to the victims and their families.” Their other well-known tracks include My Life,Awaken,Zephyretta,Zoopertrip,Sindrome, and Find My Way.

(Them Clones will play at High Spirits,Koregaon Park,on

Friday,at 8 pm)
