Techie drowns in Bhushi dam
Sanjay Narayan Nambiar,23,a techie from Hyderabad,drowned in Lonavala’s Bhushi dam on Sunday afternoon. Nambiar and three friends had been on a picnic from Mumbai. Lonavala police said two of the group,including Nambiar,had slipped and fallen into the dam while walking on the rocks. “Both of them could not swim. Local people and life guards saved the other youth while Nambiar’s body was fished out later in the evening. All the four were software engineers working in Hyderabad and had come to Mumbai to visit one of their friends,” an officer said.

Fire breaks out in restaurant kitchen

A fire broke out in the kitchen of a restaurant,Central Park,near Inox Cinema around 7.30 pm on Sunday. DN Nagalkar,assistant divisional officer with the fire brigade,said,“After we received information about excessive smoke coming out of the kitchen,we rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control within 10 minutes. We had taken along three fire tenders,anticipating a widespread fire but fortunately it was not severe… We are yet to confirm the exact reason but prima facie it seems that a fault in a water heater caused it.”

Mixed response to ultimatum on NET
The state government’s ultimatum to universities across the state to make all their professors to clear their National or State Eligibility Test (NET/SET) drew a mixed response from principals of various colleges. While most of them supported the step,some said that fixing a particular date,that of December 31,2011,for clearing the exam might not work out. According to a ten-point order issued by R G Jadhav,universities in the state have been asked to disaffiliate colleges which are functioning with lecturers and professors who have not yet clear the NET/SET.

Prakash Lagu dead
Director of Lagu Bandhu Jewellers,Prakash Lagu,died here after a brief illness. He was 69. He was in charge of the Pune operations of Lagu Bandhu. A qualified mechanical engineer,he was involved in the diamond and pearl jewellery trade. Lagu was a keen sports enthusiast too. Inspired by the late,Bhausaheb Patankar he used to present programmes of Marathi shaayari. He is survived by wife Anjali ,son Sarang Lagu and two daughters.Director of Paranjape Schemes,Shashank Paranjape,is his son-in-law.
