As per Bombay High Court records,31.44 lakh cases were pending in the state till March 2012. Maximum cases were from Mumbai,followed by Pune. Of around 4 lakh cases pending in Pune district today,around 7,000 are pending in Pune district MACTs (except Baramati,Daund and Indapur,for which there is a separate tribunal at Baramati) and about 5,000 at the family court.
In 2010,4.69 lakh cases were pending in Pune,while in 2011 it was 4.27.
A large number of pending civil court matters are pertaining to cheque bouncing and those that fall under Negotiable Instruments Act,1881,there is an attempt to dispose them of through alternative dispute redressal methods,like the Lok Adalat.
About 2.69 lakh cases under the Negotiable Instruments Acts are pending in various courts in the state (other than Metropolitan magistrate courts in Mumbai). Between April 1,2010 and March 31,this year,2.38 lakh fresh cases were filed in these courts,out of which 3.47 were disposed of.
The Pune District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA) had settled 30,586 cases in the Maha Lokadalat in September 2011 and the number in March this year had increased to 43,592. “This has helped in reducing pendency over the last couple of years,” lawyers said.
