Professor Alfred J Tria, director of Orthopedic Fellowship Training,New Jersey, was in the city recently to perform knee-replacement surgeries using path breaking techniques
Knee arthritis is becoming a universal disease and is increasingly affecting the younger generation. Professor Alfred JTria, director of Orthopedic Fellowship Training, from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School,New Jersey,USA,visited the Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital to perform three knee replacement surgeries using the latest techniques, along with renowned joints replacement surgeon at the Aditya Birla Hospital,Dr Mahesh Kulkarni. Professor Tria is a well known knee replacement surgeon and has pioneered several surgical techniques for this surgery. He is an authority on navigation in total knee replacement and minimally invasive knee surgery.
Professor Tria visited Aditya Birla Hospital as a part of the programme to exchange ideas on the latest techniques and new implants which are being used for knee replacement surgeries. Three operations were performed on patients who were within the 50-60 years age group. The Genesis (Smith and Nephew) system for knee replacement was used during the surgeries. Dr Kulkarni and Professor Tria used implants made from the OXINIUM (Oxidized Zirconium) material, which is a unique one as it is made of metal, but behaves like a ceramic surface. Also, the plastic that’s used is refined to a more durable artificial substance called highly cross linked polyethylene to last longer. This technology is relatively new and would be very beneficial for patients who are suffering from knee arthritis and need surgery at a younger age. A traditional implant lasts for approximately 15 years, but with patients getting affected by knee arthritis at younger ages, these traditional implants dont last life-long. Hence,we have started using OXINIUM now, which is made of metal, but has all the advantages of a ceramic implant and also feels like one. The advantage is that it has a longer life span, said Dr. Kulkarni.
I am very happy to visit the Aditya Birla Hospital. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the infrastructure and all kinds of modern equipments available at the hospital. The treatment they provide is equivalent to international standards and the same is being done at very economical rates . I am glad to have visited a hospital that is doing such enormous good work in Pune, said Professor Tria.
