Bribery: engineer held

The Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI-ACB) on Thursday arrested a junior engineer at the office of the Assistant Garrison Engineer (East),Dehu Road,for accepting a bribe of Rs 16,500 from a private contractor.

According to additional superintendent of police Subash Chandra Gupta,Dattatray D Borawake (42),a resident of Talegaon,had demanded money from the contractor for clearing the payment of his pending bills. He has been booked under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. “The contractor has been taking up civil work at the office for many years and he is servicing two contracts now. One contract was awarded to him for Rs 6.31 lakh while the second one was for Rs 11 lakh. The junior engineer had demanded three per cent of the total bill amount for clearing the bills.”

Gupta said the contractor had paid an advance of Rs 15,000 for clearing the first bill. For clearing the second bill,they agreed upon a bribe of Rs 25,000. It was decided that the contractor would pay 50 per cent of the bribe amount for clearing the second bill and Rs 4,000 as a reward for clearing the first bill on Thursday afternoon.
